The Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice (KICJ) successfully hosted the International Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on February 27, 2024. The meeting's theme was "Comparative Perspective on Korea's Senseless Crime Offenders and Japan's 'Lone Wolf' Attackers." This event aimed to analyze and compare the motives and behavior patterns of criminals in Korea and Japan, thereby deepening the understanding of crime phenomena in both countries.

Before the meeting, President Taehoon Ha conducted a brief discussion with the UNAFEI delegation, including Director YAMAUCHI Yoshimitsu of UNAFEI.

The 1st EGM began with an introduction of participants and a briefing on the agenda by Dr. Jisun Choi, Director of Cooperation Office. In the first session, Dr. Mana Yamamoto from the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) presented on "Analysis of Lone Attacks as a Challenge for P/CVE from a Comparative Perspective: Types of Lone Attackers and Their Radicalization Processes in Japan, and Recommendations for Prevention Measures." Dr. Yamamoto's presentation provided insights into the types of lone attackers in Japan, their radicalization processes, and recommended prevention measures.

In the subsequent session, Dr. Jeongsook Yoon, Director of the Crime Analysis & Survey Research Division at KICJ, delivered a presentation titled "An Analysis of the Types of Abnormal Motive Crimes and Their Countermeasures." Director Yoon analyzed the types of senseless crimes observed in Korea and proposed effective countermeasures.

This meeting served as an important platform for sharing insights on crime response strategies in Korea, Japan, and the international community. It also laid the groundwork for future-oriented research and cooperation.
